The Community Shield revealed just how much a superior technical side Arsenal is to the two current Premiership powerhouses of Chelsea and Liverpool. Arsenal played a superb game against Zagreb, showing slick interchange and brilliant movement. The Community Shield showed two sides supremely confident in their tactical abilities and physical strength.

Arsene Wenger is a visionary. The Emirates Stadium is very much his project. He has a vision of how the game should be played and his youngsters-and recent signings-all point that he wants his players to be lightning quick and highly technical.

Wenger spotted a future superstar of the game in Fabregas. Fabregas will be the cornerstone of the side, the one who dictates the pace and fluency of the game.

Arsene knows that he will not be able to match Chelsea's spending ability as long as Abrahamovic bankrolls them. Therefore, he is building a side that could play the best football in Europe-although some would say that they already do.

Arsene seems to have set his sights on winning the Premiership in the 2007-2008 season. By then, expect Diaby, Walcott, Merida and Djourou to be superstars of the game.

The thing is that this Arsenal side does not have to wait for next season. They can win the title this season. The Community Shield showed that Chelsea could be there for the taking in this coming season. What Arsenal have to make sure is that it is them - and not Liverpool or Man Utd- that is ready to pounce if the unthinkable happens.

To do this, Arsenal needs another central midfielder to Fabregas, Gilberto and Flamini. Diaby has had a serious injury and while he will be back in November, he will certainly need a period of adaptation to reach his peak.

The fact is that Toure, Gilberto and Fabregas will not be able to play 60 games each next season. An injury to either one of them could deeply hurt Arsenal.

If a Reyes - Baptista swap is a possibility, Arsenal should make it happen as soon as possible. Wenger could transform "The Beast" into an all action midfielder. However, a Madrid-based friend of mine has told me that the reason the deal is stalling is that Fabio Cappello himself is not as keen on Reyes and certainly not for the price being mentionned.

The other player that could still move to Arsenal is Curtis Davies. A quick and athletic English centre back, Davies will be the perfect addition to the already promising trio of Toure, Senderos and Djourou. Davies can also play at left back. The reason that Lupoli has not yet gone to Derby is that Arsenal want him to be the bait to clinch the deal with WBA.

Get those two players and Arsene's grand plan could come to fruition in 2007, not in 2008.

Can't see the Davies transfer happening. AW obviously doesn't want to pay £10m which seems to be what it will take. Haven't seen Connolly but have heard good things about him so we have 4/5 centre backs and even without he whose name should not be mentioned we are quite well off for left backs. Is Baptista a good enough defensive midfield - I honestly don't know but if he is then his versatility would be an asset. But for me we should not compromise at all in getting the best man we can afford which might be quite a lot. I will be interested to see how Hargreaves plays tonight.

Sell Cole and Reyes and possibly get Baptista in return. Or at least another world-class striker. Put Van Persie on left wing and rotate with Rosicky and possibly Walcott, freeing up another striker slot to compete with Adebayor and Henry. Van Persie on the left wing would be a quality position. Works hard and can link up with the attack as he did on the right wing for Holland in the WC. And get another central ball winner midfielder.

i think let reyes go and take thebeast plus some cash and buy saviola to replace reyes.
we then sell sahley and buy curtis davis and we have ourselves a 3 players and some cash for the jan transfer window.

Don't believe we need another forward. Bendtner's going to be special. I think we will stick with RVP in a central role - he has vision and strength as opposed to real speed.

4 strikers does seem too many. But so can 4 central midfielders. Particularly if there are no injuries (which I doubt will happen every team suffers injuries over the course of a season). But everyone would get a chance. Gilberto, Fabregas, Diaby and another ball winner/tackler. If Henry gets injured for a good few weeks at least, we could cope, but we don't yet know how many goals Adebayor and V Persie can get. Said it before. But remember United in 1999. They had Cole, Sheringham, Solksjaer and cunt Yorke. All of which contributed and scored a shit load of goals. Imagine if we have 3 major injuries in midfield/striker in early September time we would all be moaning about lack in squad depth. The team does need new players even though it seems hard to buy new players and where to put them if everyone stays fit. But I am slightly more confident because I would trust Djourou and that Ghanan bloke in defence and then we have Diaby who will contribute but needs time to settle back in and be pyschologically scarred for a bit about going into challenges because of his injury. Up front if we bought another striker it be tough to play Henry and co. But like I said, it all works out over the course of a season. Naturally if Arsenal wasn't to have any injuries then we wouldn't perhaps need any more signings. But that won't happen. Players will get injured and suspended. Besides, players like Diaby and Adebayor are still 21ish, they can afford to be a bit more patient. Someone like Torres/Baptista and a ball winner in midfield and we can believe in getting back the title!

Btw, what happened about Wenger threatening legal action for that cunt who broke Diaby's ankle? Not heard anything more about it.

yaya toure went to monaco for 4.5 mil euro? heard we bid for him for 9 mil pound last season. he should have been our final piece of puzzle. i think wenger would sign illiasu so we would have enough cb. just one more tough tackling six footer in the midfield please.

  12. # Anonymous Neal

    We won't get Baptista because:

    1) He wants a Spanish passport and is not set to be given it until January

    2) Baptista plays the strong attacking midfielder role (Diaby) and the strong attacker (Adebayor), roles which are covered.

    3) Other areas are more important like the left wing, and defense.

Buy another striker! Buy Saviola! This is like a bad case of deja vu of all the crap suggestions we had earlier on in summer. We don't need any more forwards because we have Henry who is World class, van Persie who will develop into a a top, top forward as long as he's playing regularly (that means not buying another player to compete with his playing time), a good complimentary forward/'plan B' forward in 'crackhead hair-do' Ade & Walcott waiting in the wings as the fourth choice forward/wing forward while Aliadiere will also get the odd game. Oh yeah, we also have Bendtner out on loan getting the required experience to compete for a place next season with Lupoli possibly about to do the same. Where are we going to play as many as 8 forwards next season if we buy another now?

We just don't have enough depth to the squad to give us more than an outside chance of winning the Premiership this season though I agree it is possible and we will do well even if we don't win it. Unless we are very lucky with injuries it isn't going to take too many crocks for us to struggle in key areas. Central midfield is a notable weakness. If Flamini is having to play left back we only have Song for back up until Diaby is back in November (probably a third of the way through the season !). I guess Lauren could fill in there but he won't be back until September sometime and it will take a while to get match fit. Cygan will do ok as a squad defender and emergency left back and I guess Hoyte will cover the central and right back roles but we aren't exactly blessed with experienced defensive cover.

We are most comfortable in the wide postions and up front but we are going to have to win the ball and keep it out of our net in order for the forwards to prosper. Though there is still time it doesn't look as though we are going to make any major signings to strengthen any of these positions in which case keeping Cole for another season sounds like a necessity.

we are gonna play with 2 wing backs (clichy & eboue) this season. flamini & lauren are more discipline in fulfiling their defensive duty but i am sure le boss would prefer starting clichy & eboue if they are fit. unless we are playing 4-5-1, we are gonna be very vulnerable to counter attacks.

I really cannot see Arsene blowing £8m - £10m on Curtis Davies and i cant blame him. We have Djourou we dont need Davies. If we are going to sign a centre-back then it has to be one of experience not a youngster. Sedneros and Djourou are there for now and the fture we dont need to splash £10m on anotehr young centre-back. From what i've seen of Connolly he might actuallymake it butgive him a bit of time.

Baptista is not needed. Not been impressed with him at all in Madrid ad we need a defensive midfielder not an attacking midfielder. I'd be happy with Hargreaves - good ages and can play in a variety of positions.

At the end of the day we can all speculate but there is only one person who matters and who knows. Arsene Knows.

  23. # Anonymous Joe_@**

the flash - no offence, rvp is gonna get the goals for us along with henry. gallas 90k per week is no go. ribery could be just like reyes, or maybe worse. he is unsettled everywhere he goes.

2 PLAYERS AWAY. Yeah Maradona and Pele. Fuckin Muppet. Please dont waste time writing this fucking shite, if you have nothing good to say, then dont fucking blog, you cunt. Very few if any overseas players come straight into the league and are instantly succesful. Which means that, any potential transfers will still need a year of adaptation.

This year will be exciting because we will begin to see where the current group are going, which players will make it, and which will not.

As for winning the title dont write this bollocks because you will only upset yourself in the long run.

I really don't understand how people are not getting this?! We don't need any more forwards. We need possibly one player for the midfield who can help whichever of our forwards, of which we have many, Wenger decides to use in any given sitution to be effective. What I'd really like to see is a central midfielder who can challenge Gilberto for a starting place. Not only because he's now the wrong side of 30 but because there isn't anyone in the current squad who is a natural rival for his position to stop him becoming complacent. Even if Diaby comes back to full fitness or Flamini gets any games in the middle neither of them play as deep as Gilberto or offer the defence the same type of protection. If Song can learn the role of winning the ball & getting it to the more creative midfielders in an unfussy manner whilst also being able to cope with the pressing game employed by all the northern monkeys then great, he'll do for me when he gets there but I suspect Song won't be ready for a good couple of years yet.

Bitter, considering Song is what, still only 18 I'll choose to lay off him for a couple of seasons & reserve judgment 'til then. I have no idea how good Gilberto was at 18 but I doubt he was much better considering he's still ponderous with his passing but he offers us something now doesn't he? Anyway, I'm not saying we should rely on Song at all, I'm saying get someone in in case a lot of our nearly men in the middle don't work out. How does hedging my bets make me a muppet? Oh, & I'm 100% with you on Cygan so I reckon your assumption I back every Wenger transfer makes you more of a cunt than me.

heard tons of good things about Huntelaar. one to watch this season and hopefully AW will bring him in if necessary.

as for us, 2 players would be good, but really we are one powerful defensive midfielder away from a league winning team. most Gooners on these blogs say the same thing - we cant all be wrong. Gilberto is good but he is not going to scare the opposition when we go to some northern outpost and he does not win any balls in the air. see nightmooks comments above as he is spot on.

the other player would be a centre back (Illiasu and kick cygan out). I even think our defence is good enough barring injuries.

  31. # Anonymous goonerd

Hargreaves correctly man of the match tonight. He is just what we need - a terrier who can also play. He'd be as at home at the Emirates in August as he would at Bolton in January. We mustn't let Man U get him - I doubt that it would take the £30M mentioned but if it did, so what - so long as we offload Jose and the Arsehole. I'm not fogetting Diaby whose got great promise but we need competition/cover and Gilberto's best days are long gone.

Why anyone would want to leave Arsenal football club at this time beggers belief. The club has been brought up into line with all the top clubs in europe, 60,000 sorry 60,430 stadium, money to spend on quality players who want to come to the arsenal because we are the biggest club in London. Cole and Reyes will be watching at the end of this season wishing they werent such money grabbing wankers and wished they just wanted to play for a club with tradition and morals!! And probably watching from the bench too....

make sense, blingblong. I don't think that chelski have much option anyway with Abidal and Riise being out of reach. But I personally do not think we are desperately in need of replacing Cole as we have Flamini and Hoyte available at the moment. I will be happy to see the transfer happen on the last day of transfer window and keep the money for January transfer window.

Aliadiere is not useless, he is just luckless, as luckless as Chris Kirkland or Jeffers. I am afraid he will never make it for us.

Joe_@, I too think Huntelaar is a very exciting prospect. Maybe it's not coincidence that he was the first player to score at the Emirates Stadium. Fingers crossed.

  44. # Anonymous MOFO

There's not much doubt about what we need,as the general feel is around here. Our attacking options are superb, probably better than most teams in PL. But I don't think Flamini is getting enough credit for the potential he showed in the game vs Chelski a while back. Arsenal dominated the midfield with Flamini and Cesc, and it wasn't all down to Cesc. Flamini is a terrier, who will fight till he drops! He's not a big powerhouse, but he makes up for that by being a pain in the arse, never giving up a ball. With Hoyte doing well so far at left back,we've got Flamini as back up for Gilberto, and by the time G is ready to hang up his boots, we have two new big guys ready to take his place in Diaby and Song.
The real pressing issue is, as most of the people here agree with, is replacing big C. And I honestly think bringing in Chivu would solve all problems here! He can play in the middle and left (not the best attacking left back, but he is mainly a CB, meaning Cygan would be redundant and be given a penny and a shoe up his ass, cause lets face it, the guy is about as reliable at the back as Boumsong....

now wenger is trying to off load cole to Milan. thats cool with me. if he went for say £11m to Inter Milan thats better than £20m to Chavski. not letting them and cole get what they want is worth £8m.

I say get shot of reyes now even at a small loss. he is sh*t anyway. cole is a better player but wenger has lost all patients with him which is unusual for AW.

some good points about flamini. but I just dont think he is as composed on the ball as some players. also his passing is not great, but then neither is Gilberto's. but his workrate is better than Hargreaves. in fact he is almost a carbon copy of hargreaves so why would we need another one of him? I wish Flam was another 4 inches taller, to make him a more all round player.

  47. # Anonymous Peter W

Flamini's problem in midfield is the same as Fabregas. Both can get overrun against the less talented but more powerful midfielders in the Premiership. In part that has to be a case of physical development and hopefully both will be stronger this year than last. How they shape up physically determines whether we need someone else in there or not but Lauren does provide a back up option. Gazzap does have a point about lack of midfield height and central midfield does have an unsettled feel about it. I guess Arsene will have worked all this out and if we can avoid too many injuries then maybe we can get by with what we have.

OK - the BBC did say £30M for Hargreaves but they obviously misheard - he's great value at £13M - IMHO still good value approaching £20M. I agree with the points above re similarity with Flamini but only to a certain extent. Hargreaves is an established Champions League veteran, at 25, and now looking like a key man in the England team. He didn't run around like a headless chicken last night - he was man of the match and justifiably so. He will do a great job for Manure if we let them get him but, working under AW, could do an even better job for us. I don't dismiss Flamini he is a very good utility player, honest and with a great heart and he has a good future with us.

here is a point to ponder; chelsea had never beaten us under raneiri & we have never beaten chelsea under mourinho - the table has turned against us so please stop bragging that flamini & fabregas dominated the midfield against chelsea sometime ago. credit to flami & fab but we have to get at least 4 points from chelsea this season to stand a chance.

  60. # Anonymous Peter W

It isn't true that Ranieri's Chelsea didn't beat us. They knocked us out of the CL in his final season. Mourinho's Chelsea are difficult to beat. They don't give much away and that is their strength. We haven't been at our best the last couple of seasons and have struggled against Man U just as much as Chelsea but it would be quite wrong to imagine that we can't beat them. Whether we can do so this season remains to be seen but we are further forward now than at the start of last season.

teams nowadays do not play to their own strength against us. they play to our weakness & ferguson has been ringing up all other managers telling them how to beat us (e.g against wigan last season). we are most vulnerable to pressing game, physical challenge, long ball & set piece. hope le boss has addressed these weaknesses by now

reo-coker is the man we need.

    end of.

West Ham United will never sell Reo Coker to us no matter the price, they are a rival club in London and also will not want to sell their best players and go on relegation again. They have learnt their lesson the hard way.
We will be better this season cos the dead woods are out of the club and the last two (cashly and REAL-yes) will be gone between now and next week, AW will use the money to bring in one or two more solid players like he's promised befor the tranfer door slams close end of month. Sahota, have faith and believe, remember that: WENGER KNOWS!
